9 Tips for Safely Handling Flammable Solvents

August 15, 2014

Flammable chemicals, like solvents, have widespread usage for a legion of needs – but because they’re dangerous, it’s important to keep in mind that caution and extreme care should always be exercised.

Fire Prevention Measures for Solvents

To minimize the risk of a fire or explosion, follow these nine tips as preventative measures when dealing with solvents:

  1. Do everything you can to diminish the chance of splashing or spraying of solvents when they’re being transferred.
  2. Do away with ignition sources whenever possible (such as open flames, hot surfaces, and electrical equipment).
  3. Always keep solvent containers closed.
  4. Be wary of static. In order to prohibit build-up, you should ground or bond equipment to maintain a conductive electrical path. To dissipate a static charge before you transfer liquid with a hose and nozzle, you should attach a grounding wire to the receiving container and sustain contact between the container and nozzle once you begin filling.
  5. Always provide general and local ventilation to lessen concentrations of fumes, vapors, and gases.
  6. Because of the risk of autogenous ignition, never exceed the auto ignition temperature of any solvent.
  7. Keep solid spill prevention measures in place. In the case of an accidental spill or discharge, act immediately. Be sure that you have a spill kit on hand and that everyone is familiar with spill protocol.
  8. Always review the MSDS and manufacturer’s directions for definitive handling guidelines on each product.
  9. Do not pour solvents down the drain, and never throw solvent-soaked rags or paper towels into standard waste receptacles.
